James Lawrence, the great-uncle of Nigel Horne, was born in St Lawrence, Thanet, Kent, England on Oct 4, 18931,2,3,4 and married his cousin on his father's side Mary Knowler (with whom he had 5 children: James Thomas, George Edward, Thomas William, Jack and Ronald) at St Augustine, Northbourne, Kent, England on Sep 14, 19185 (JulAug/Sep).

James spent all of his life in Kent, England. Throughout his life, he lived in several places around the county: in Staple on Mar 31, 19017; at Oast Cottages, Cleve, Monkton on Apr 2, 19116; at Meadow Cottages, Marshside on Jun 19, 19218; and at 1 Church Cottage, Woodnesborough on Sep 29, 19392. He served in the military from 1914 to 1915 in France (east Kent Buffs then Labour Corps Awarded the Military Medal).
