Nelson Coombs, the second cousin twice-removed on the mother's side of Nigel Horne, was born in Seasalter, Kent, England on Oct 6, 18941,2 and baptized in Hernhill, Kent, England on Nov 11, 1894. He married Hilda Packman at Christ Church, Dunkirk, Kent, England on Nov 11, 19223. Like his father, he was an agricultural laborer.

Nelson spent all of his life in Kent, England. Throughout his life, he lived in several places around the county: at Red Lion Inn in Hernhill on Mar 31, 19016; on Crockham Lane in Hernhill on Apr 2, 19115; at The Pavilion, Strood on Sep 29, 19391; and at The Bothy, Staple Street in Hernhill in 19744. He served in the navy from 1914 to 1921.
