She married Dora Simmerman (with whom she had 5 surviving children Richard Andrew, Kathy, Janice J, Michael and David) in Brightwood, Marion, Indiana, USA on Aug 11, 1945.
Throughout her life, Katherine lived in several places: on Joe Zink Road, Clay, Owen, Indiana on Apr 2, 19301; in Limedale, Putnam, Indiana on May 11, 19402; and on 81 Keightly Road, Greencastle, Putnam, Indiana in 1992, in 1995 and in 2011.
She died on Nov 6, 2011 at Putnam County Hospital, Greencastle, Putnam, Indiana (katherine Bixler Simmerman, age 83, of Greencastle, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011 at Putnam County Hospital. Born May 15, 1928 in Owen County, near Spencer, Ind., the sixth of seven children, she was the daughter of Ralph Voras and Nellie Mae (Parrish) Bixler. She married Dora Forest Simmerman on Aug. 11, 1945 and enjoyed 59 years of marriage, until his passing in 2004. Katherine retired from Mallory's, where she had worked as an assembler for 15 years, retiring on April 1, 1988. She had previously worked at DePauw University and RCA in Indianapolis. She was a long-time member of the Church of God of Greencastle, she was a woman of devote faith. She enjoyed gardening, genealogy, and most of all, time spent with her family. Survivors include her children, Richard (Fran) Simmerman, Michael (Marcia) Simmerman, Kathy Miles, Janice (Terry) Lents and David Simmerman, all of Putnam County; her brother, Arthur Eugene (Sharon) Snider; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Ruth Addy, Kitty Burgess-Noriega, Pauline Weaver and Anna Mae Hunter; two brothers, Robert and Thomas Bixler; a grandson, Jason Spears; and a great-great-grandson, DeAndre McCombs. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Bro. David Bard officiating. Interment will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 4-7 pm.
