A butcher's assistant and the child of Charles Port (a grocer and confectioner) and Martha Jordan (a shop keeper),

James Port, the third cousin twice-removed on the mother's side of Nigel Horne, was born in Cheriton, Kent, England c. Aug 18851,2,3,4 and baptized there at St Martins Church on Sep 13, 1885.

Throughout his life, James lived in several places: at Park Terrace in Cheriton on Apr 5, 18911; at Enbrook Buildings in Cheriton on Mar 31, 19012; at 77 High Street in Cheriton in 1908; and at 85 High Street in Cheriton on Apr 2, 19113. During 1916, he was serving in the army (regiment: The Buffs (East Kent Regiment); Rank: Private; Service number: G/9408).

He died on Sep 6, 1916 in France5,6 and was buried at Arras Cemetery, Arras, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France in 1916.
